We all belong to communities. I'm Canadian, Albertan, homesteader, husband, father, grandfather and so on and so forth. Some groups I belong to by default and some groups I actively search out. By varying degrees I benefit from being included in these communities. As the community gets smaller and more specific to your interests the perceived benefits increase. As our larger communities become more divergent from our personal interests and views we concentrate more on our smaller communities and establish ties to people who we can learn from, share and support.
I grow a variety of nutrient dense microgreens all year. I have learned to make bread from my own flour, butter, ghee, kefir, and some cheeses from my own milk cow. I dehydrate surplus microgreens at low temperatures to preserve the nutrients for use as spice.. I make apple cider vinegar, vanilla, fire cider and sauerkraut also. My wife looks after a outdoor garden and produces homemade laundry soap. We raise pasture poultry in summer and have free range eggs. We can make a meal almost entirely from food we have grown. But....
as much as we can do I barter with others in a small community for things I want but don't have time for or the knowledge to do it successfully. An example is canning. I like it but don't desire to do it so I trade or buy it from people I trust. Wild meat-I like but not great at hunting or processing so Ill trade. There's lots of things labor can be traded for if you're short of cash or goods.
The whole idea about community is to supplement one another will skills or supplies that not every individual will have. The other benefit of community is having someone to talk to and learn from. The internet only goes so far. I prefer learning something new or getting advice from someone I know. Just to have a coffee and kick around new ideas or solve a problem is beneficial to your general and mental health. It doesn't cost anything to start and there's lots of benefits so why not start or add to your community today!
Come for a visit. The coffee is always on.
Cheers
Grandpa Carson
